Have you ever watched a hamster running on a wheel and said to yourself, “Boy, I sure wish that could be me?” Then we’ve got great news: that can be you, and it’s all thanks to the magic of treadmills!

Weight loss. Healthier joints. Greater endurance, increased bone density, and improved mental health. All the benefits of running and walking are yours to enjoy once you’ve welcomed a treadmill to your home. And if you’re an ardent runner during the warmer seasons, a treadmill will let you maintain all your progress while you’re snowbound.

Don’t just go out and buy the first treadmill you encounter, though. Choosing the right treadmill is paramount to achieving your fitness goals. It’s also easy once you know what to look for!

Manual or Motorized

Do you want to spend the least money possible on a treadmill? Then you have no other choice than to go manual. You’ll have to make do with fewer features, manually set the incline (if that feature is available), and run on an altogether less sturdy treadmill, but such is the cost of saving money. If all you’re doing is walking, then a manual treadmill may prove perfect for your needs.

If you plan on running on your treadmill or using it over longer periods of time, then you’ll definitely want to invest in a motorized model. It will convert 100% of your effort into perceived forward momentum, which feels more (A) natural, and (B) satisfying. And because a motorized treadmill has more available electricity, it can treat you to a wider variety of features such as incline control, preset workouts, and smartphone integration.

Running Surface

A treadmill’s running surface is called a “belt.” Not all belts are alike! The longer the belt, the longer the usable surface of the treadmill. If you’re only walking, then you can make do with the approximately 45″ of surface provided by a shorter belt. If you’re running, then you’ll want a longer belt; around 60″ should prove adequate for all but the tallest of athletes (we’re looking at you, Shaq).

Belt width is also important. A narrow belt is around 16″ wide, and is typically adequate for shorter runners and walkers. A wide belt is around 22″, and may be necessary if you’ve ever played center for the Orlando Magic. Finally, consider the thickness of your next treadmill’s belt. A thin belt is okay for casual walking, but a thicker one is needed if  you want shock

absorption.

Incline

If you’re accustomed to running around Sioux City, IA, then you’re used to some hills. We’re not saying the Loess Hills are comparable to the Swiss Alps, but they’re enough to provide some variety while simultaneously treating runners to a greater challenge.

If you want to continue to remember what it feels like to run at an incline, then you’d best choose a treadmill that offers that feature. Standard treadmills are typically available with up to 15% incline, whereas some specialized models (appropriately known as “incline trainers”) can achieve up to 40% grade.

Just walking? Save money by selecting a treadmill without adjustable incline, or at the very least one which requires manual incline adjustment.

Built-in Technology

The average treadmill is much more than “just” a treadmill. Many are available with their own apps, which enable you to keep track of your performance and plan your upcoming workouts on your phone or tablet. Some feature built-in fans, speakers, and even TV screens so you can stay comfortable and entertained during your workout. Trying to get more motivated to exercise? Consider investing in a treadmill with preset workouts. Some display virtual scenery that corresponds to the workout program in real time.

Though it’s arguably not “technology,” you should decide if you want a treadmill with folding capability. If you live in an apartment, then it’s a great way to avoid losing a significant percentage of your floor space.
